Judi Paul is excited about her junior girls’ squad.

Chris Simpson is the new rugby coach with a nice foundation of returning players.

All three Haliburton High coaches are charged about the coming season.

They are, however, less than ecstatic about the pitch.

And unfortunately footie and rugby are both played on the pitch.

Which right now is ground zero for the return of an ark.

“We’re hoping that the field is going to be ready for Friday, and I was talking to Griff (track coach Bruce Griffith) and he seems to think it’s drying out,” said coach Klose on Monday evening.

That was Monday night.

It’s now Tuesday and the Gary Brohman field is enduring yet another April onslaught.

Chatting with Ron Yake on Tuesday and he says it may not be ready until next week, and that would put the kibosh on the planned soccer home openers on Friday afternoon.

Unlike Noah, neither Griff nor Yake have the almighty on speed dial.

Track and field, rugby and soccer seasons are not in jeopardy. But all have had to improvise and juggle practice times in order to get their licks in.

The 2011 girls’ soccer season began yesterday againstFenelonFallsand continues tomorrow – we hope – on the Brohman pitch versus IE Weldon. (Game times are3 pmfor seniors and4:30for the juniors on Friday Apr 29) Yake says that because of the compressed schedule the Hawks may have to head out of town to Lindsay, to get the doubleheader played.

I also chatted with track coach Griffith last Monday.

He and some of his pole vault, javelin, discus and sideway leapers were taking advantage of the sun-filled Easter Monday to get some practice in.

We can’t really use the pole vault pit in the rain and the forecast is saying that today is the only sunny day we’re getting this week,” saidGriffith.

Ron Yake says Simpson had a scheduled rugby game cancelled last Wednesday (April 20) because of that, yikes, snow day.

The track team is headed for their first meet down south on Friday (April 29).

Griffith, Simpson, Paul and Klose are hoping for some solstice and solace from Gaia – who seems oddly at odds with her nature this spring.

On Monday May 2 the senior girls are at home again for a3 pmmatch against IE Weldon. The juniors get a bye that day because Aquinas has no junior club this year.

On Tuesday May 3 Simpson’s rugby club pop into action on the road againstSt. Thomas.
